Elis Hoymann

Elis Hoymann

“Elis Hoymann uses the means of photography to create images that bring to mind her focussing eye, her search for artistic structures, like the procedures which she uses to raise the representational to abstraction. Whereas the exploration of the world, as well as the exploration of technical possibilities, represent movements defining the image that happen at the same time and are reciprocally conditional.  She has command of a broad range of technical instruments that range from a camera obscura, also known as a pinhole camera, and the use of  large format cameras and multiple exposure to digitalisation.  Also, experiments in the laboratory as well as the various processual work steps are all part of a strategy in the visually realistic portrayal of reality, to uncover the haptic quality and abstract structures as a kind of artistic preservation of evidence.    The eye is “seeing with the hands“, the material texture, the palpable part of structured surfaces is made graspable in its sensual materiality and as a series of superpositions and compressions.” Renata Kaiser
