Julie Keupen

Julie Keupen

As an illustrator, she is trying to make stories, dreams and moods tangible. New techniques are tested and combined in a playful manner. Thus, for example, macro photographs, modelling clay and hand drawings become one.

“With her illustrations, Julie Keupen engages with Lewis Carroll´s story “Alice in Wonderland” in an artistic manner. But in doing so, the focus of the young artist does not lie on giving a chronological account of the journey of the protagonist Alice. Instead, it is rather the deeper meaning of the story that is based on the ideas of Sigmund Freud – which she is trying to express. It is the tension between reality and fiction, the inner and outer truth of a pubescent girl, the level of dreams and the real world. The 24-year-old artist is portraying this interplay between the different realities by deliberately using Rhetoric of alienation. Thus, the ink drawings, which represent the real level of action, are combined with macro-photographic details from the real world: the view through a glass of beer or a rainy window pane…. By doing so, the artist succeeds in bringing both levels on equal footing and in thus distorting the real world into the surreal. Julie Keupen provides a completely new interpretation of the protagonist Alice, who was seen as “Chaste Miss Disney” in the 1950s, by bringing the erotic component into the foreground. With her surreal-erotic reprise, Julie Keupen prompts us to give more weight to our dreams.” Claudia Lindner, art historian, MA
